PURE EVIL - TALK & STENCIL WORKSHOP
talk 14.00-15.00
workshop with portfolio review 15.00-17.00

Maverick London gallerist and street inspired artist PURE EVIL will talk about his gallery, his artworks, inspirations and how to survive as a new artist sandwiched between the demands of the art market and the wish to appeal to peers. Charley Uzzell Edwards aka PURE EVIL recently showed in Sao Paulo, NY, Amsterdam, Paris, Sydney, Beijing and Berlin. He is well connected working with everyone from Jarvis Cocker, Swoon to US street art legend Aaron Rose.

The NOISELAB session

Charley’s NOISELAB workshop is inspired by his latest collaboration, where he and fellow gallery owner Steve Lazarides were asked to contribute to Labour’s re-election campaign (see image).

Charley wants workshop participants to:

  • bring along your own imagery,
  • which will then be transformed by the group into political stencil art about various issues.

Charley enjoys a good debate - all points of view are truly welcome.

Who is Pure Evil?

It is illuminating to know that Charley is a descendant of Lord Chancellor Sir Thomas More, who wrote the controversial work Utopia and who was later beheaded by King Henry VIII. With this busy background (Sir Thomas was later canonised) it is only natural that Pure Evil should explore the darker side of the wreckage of Utopian dreams and the myth of the Apocalypse, a belief in the life-changing event that brings history with all its conflicts to an end.

In 1990 PURE EVIL left the Poll Tax Riots of London behind and went to live in California where he spent 10 years ingesting weapons grade psychedelics, thinking about stuff, making electronic music and printing t-shirts. Inspired by skateboard culture and the west coast character graffiti of Twist he returned to London, picked up a spray can and started painting weird fanged vampire bunnies everywhere.

Pure Evil Gallery: Ethos and Principles

• We are opposed to seeing artists as a commodity
• No conceptual artists or poseurs
• No curators allowed in the building they will be “shot on sight”
• Principles before Profit
• Wear your Politics proudly
• We are an Alternative Ideological Force
• The Gallery should be a Mecca for Independent artists
• We need to have the feeling of exhilaration from an artist and their work.

PURE EVIL Gallery
is an artist run space situated in the heart of London’s Hoxton, which has been alive and very much kicking since it’s entry into the East London contemporary art scene in October 2007. A pioneering force in the contemporary street art world, it consistently demonstrates it’s worth by exhibiting a myriad of young International and British artists.

PE Gallery is pushing boundaries by hosting a multitude of experimental film nights, creative workshops and live music sessions. We pay artists 75% of sales because we can.

They also have a music production studio in the basement where they produce their own live music which goes straight onto the website for free download as soon as it is produced.
